The Common Types of Allergy Testing Available

Common types of allergy testing include skin prick tests, blood tests (such as IgE antibody tests), patch tests, and oral food challenges. Each type of test has its advantages and is chosen based on the patient's medical history, symptoms, and suspected allergens.

• Skin Prick Testing: This method involves applying small amounts of allergens to the skin, usually on the forearm or back, and then gently pricking or scratching the skin's surface. The test measures the skin's reaction to various allergens, such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites, mold, and certain foods.
• Blood Tests (IgE Antibody Tests): Blood tests measure the levels of specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies produced by the immune system in response to allergens. These tests can detect allergens that may not be suitable for skin prick testing or when skin testing is inconclusive.
• Patch Testing: Patch tests are primarily used to diagnose contact dermatitis or allergic reactions to substances that come into direct contact with the skin, such as metals, fragrances, latex, or chemicals. Small patches containing allergens are applied to the skin for a specified period to assess skin reactions.
• Oral Food Challenges: This test involves gradually introducing increasing amounts of a suspected food allergen under medical supervision to determine if it triggers an allergic reaction. Oral food challenges are particularly useful in confirming or ruling out food allergies and assessing tolerance levels.
